At an early age, Pearl Yang was already exposed to clay in a creative way. She spent many
a happy hours playing in her garden with her siblings, climbing trees and making little
animals and teacups from earth. Her grandfather, who was her best playmate, fired
her imagination with figurines of all shapes and sizes and painted exciting stories around
them. Watching his big fleshy fingers deftly pinch the wet clay into a dog, a house, or a
face fascinated and inspired her.
Yingsu never ceased to admire her grandfather’s multi talents as a horticulturist, a
builder, an artisan and inventor. Her affinity for clay guided her to enroll at then La
Salle School of Fine Art and Design in 1986 to pursue in Ceramic Design. Upon
graduation she taught there for a year before venturing into the commercial world.
For the
next eight years Pearl worked with various groups of artists and craftsmen to design,
develop and produce fine and intricate ceramic and glass pieces. Among them were
Singapore’s heritage buildings such as the Victoria Theatre and Memorial Hall,
Peranakan shophouses along Jalan Besar Road, Syed Alwi Road and Joo Chiat Place in
miniature. Her clients include The Goodwood Park Hotel and Coffee
Club etc.
In
1999, with the support of her husband, Pearl started her own pottery studio in Bishan and
continues to do commission work for restaurants, hotels as well as individual clients. Due
to her interest in teaching she also conducts daily pottery classes for adults and
children.
The
versatility of clay continues to excite, inspire and challenge her.
